New Shower Curtain
Smell is Gross and Toxic
A study commissioned by the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice looked at the chemical composition of shower curtains
bought at a variety of retailers (from Sears, Wal Mart, Target, etc). They
found that shower curtains contain high levels of phthalates (the toxic
stuff that out gasses from plastics - water bottles, food packaging, etc). They also found high levels of organotins (very toxic to
shellfish and people), and the single shower curtain tested for off-gassing
released 108 different volatile
organic compounds (VOCs).
Which kinds of VOCs? There are some particularly nasty ones in the
108. In fact, seven of them are considered hazardous air pollutants by the EPA
- all kinds of possible health effects too, from asthma attacks to liver
toxicity - not something that you would
want in your body or that of your child.
The article didn't mention that the
new car smell is also very toxic from VOCs. There are also a lot of people
using candles, oils, other products in their home that are just as hazardous
and should be eliminated from our homes and lives.
New cars are obviously a problem. If
you have a garage, then leave the windows down to "air it out" until the smell
goes away.
But there is good news. Some
retailers are offering a greater selection of PVC-free shower curtains made of
other types of plastic or fabrics. Sears (which owns Kmart or is it the other
way around) and Target both told a reporter that their companies were phasing
out PVC shower curtains altogether.
It is always better that we take
charge to improve our lives and not wait on the government or corporations to
help us.
